Director’s Diary: National Brunel Network

Meeting this week to set up a network of Brunel sites across the country. Bristol opens an exciting new exhibition Being Brunel next month, but of course The Brunel Museum is in London where there is more Brunel and real connections with all three in the Brunel dynasty: Sir Marc Brunel who built the Thames Tunnel, Isambard Kingdom Brunel whose first project was the Tunnel and whose last was SS Great Eastern built on the Isle of Dogs, and Henry Marc Brunel (son & grandson) who built Tower Bridge. The idea is to share information, skills and marketing amongst the various groups: SS Great Britain in Bristol, STEAM Museum in Swindon, Didcot Railway Centre, The Historic Dockyard Chatham, Underfall Yard Bristol, Ironbridge Gorge, National Railway Museum York, Institution Civil Engineers, Clifton Suspension Bridge Bristol and of course National Maritime Museum London. Taking forward plans for a new museum in London, with a revitalised exhibition and new gallery for the Thames Tunnel Archive, this partnership is crucial for our success.
