Happy Birthday Isambard Kingdom Brunel!

On this day Isambard Kingdom Brunel was born 1806!

A week of celebrations. Pop Up Opera returned to the Grand Entrance Hall with a powerful and visually bleak I Capuleti e i Montecchi (Bellini) and young musicians from the Anglo-Russian Culture Club gave us stirring renditions of Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and fortifying Russian tea! Wonderful weather for workshops and boat trips: Southwark school children were in holiday mood in the upper gallery making bridges and chocolates. And lower down, on the foreshore we filmed with Channel 5 on the Great Eastern launch ramps on the Isle of Dogs. The landscaped park above high water was easy, but filming below the river wall on the remnants of Brunel’s concrete and timber meant a long way with heavy equipment over shingle and flotsam and the relics of who knows what river episodes. Ten Weeks, Ten Days, Ten Seconds is the mantra for Brunel’s three Atlantic steamships: ten weeks by sail before SS Great Western, ten days after by steamship SS Great Britain and ten seconds today by communications cables first laid by SS Great Eastern. With appropriate permission, of course, we clambered down and scampered back to safety just before the tide cut us off! The new series has the working title The Man Who Built the World, transmission autumn 2017.

Next week a Private View for Ed Bucknall in our Cafe Gallery. On marble, but these are delicate pieces. Friends and Supporters are cordially invited. Every day until Thursday we have craft activities for the school holidays. On Good Friday there are no workshops but the Museum is open right through the holiday weekend, and there will be heritage walks and boat trips each day.
