Walking the Thames Path started more as a physical challenge for myself, in the hope of recovering after two major surgeries. Living with chronic pain, I started with getting out of bed and making it up to the kitchen. I finished with walking the Thames Path, from Teddington Dock to the River Darent.
The journey was made entirely on foot, as a series of short walks, from one place on the route to another, making sure that each walk began at the same point where I finished the last one. The West offered me walks through the woods, coming deeper into human contact across Central London, and finishing with the industrial East.
The journey was meditative, as much a wandering of the mind as it was a physical movement. Each walk has provided me with an insight of London’s landscape, continually changing, offering vivid tableaux of contemporary life. The result is a series in which I try to open visual dynamics by pushing myself into physical discomfort towards a merging and exchange between landscape and my state of mind.
