Director’s Diary: Wassail!

Waes hael in Anglo-Saxon is the old Twelfth Night and the first date in the agricultural calendar. Wassail means “be well” or “Good Health”.  Usually there is a dance round apple trees, but we celebrated with two hundred people beneath the False Acacia on the river terrace. The tree does not make cider, but the blossom appears in cocktails at the Midnight Apothecary. Huge bolts now hold the tree together, but still we have ARMFULS of fragrant honey coloured blossom in the spring (known as Black Locust Blossom by the Americans). The Cocktail Gardener uses the blossom for nectar in a beautiful honey liqueur libation.

Last week also saw the 190th anniversary of the Thames Tunnel Flood and IK Brunels escape from drowning. Good Health therefore seems an appropriate greeting. Thinking ahead, and thinking of more anniversaries, 2019 is the 250th anniversary of the birth of Sir Marc Brunel. Perhaps the lesser known fathers time has come and we should begin lobbying for postage stamps, specially minted coins and celebratory lectures. Who knows, perhaps there will be other things to celebrate
