Director’s Diary: Tunnels and PR Disasters

I hope like me you enjoyed The Guardian article on the Thames Tunnel Archive, the beautiful drawings recently bought at auction. The online version Thames Tunnel archive comes home to Brunel Museum is here, where you will also find a link to the Royal opening of the Grand Entrance Hall last year. In the printed version go to page 21 and the headline PR disaster laid bare. Maev Kennedy’s sense of humour finds the right tag for our small news triumph…

On Monday Bryn Bird gives a talk at the Institute Structural Engineers on the subject of the Thames Tunnel Archive and on Friday Tom Furber talks about Tunnels at London Metropolitan Archives.  Institute Structural Engineers declare themselves our ally in the campaign for proper recognition of the work of Henry Marc Brunel and his business partner Sir John Wolfe Barry. They built Tower Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge, and although their story is well told on our daily heritage boat trips, it should be told more widely. Here’s a website with some useful information and links https://sirjohnwolfebarry.com
