Director’s Diary: All Greek to me

Equinox and we celebrate light and shade in the Grand Entrance Hall. Sunday the underground chamber is Plato’s CAVE, and with chamber orchestra, choir and flickering uplights on the wall, we have the perfect location to explore Plato’s famous allegory. Monday’s private view is an exhibition of collage inspired by the emerging shapes created as salts dry on the walls, random and mysterious. Five schools visiting this week will meet Brunel in person, or at least a shadow of the man, played by our costumed actor. Secret Adventures project three beautiful films on the walls of the chamber. On Friday and Saturday – for St Patrick – the hall echoes with the music of Nathan Osgood: bardic melodies from Ireland where the lost tribe from Greece was swept and where Hellenophile James Joyce wrote a shadow tale of Ulysses.
Each day, as usual, Thames Clippers ply the wine dark sea with merchants, poets and adventurers headed for Brunel’s ancient hall… The calendar for the week is below.
