Director’s Diary: The developing story

Robert Howlett took the famous London picture of Brunel and chains on the Isle of Dogs and photographed the engineer’s Royal Albert Bridge in Saltash. In her lecture at the Structural Engineers, Rose Teanby explains just how fearless and agile was the photographer, shinning up hundred foot ladders in middle of the river with all his heavy, bulky equipment. Or scaling the high platform at the prow of the great ship, before putting his head under a thick black blanket to develop on site in the mud some quite extraordinary prints. Under the circumstances, the laborious fourteen step wet collodion process is not just a testament to his skills and perseverance, it is a near miracle…
