London has more Brunel family projects than anywhere else in the country including Bristol, the city most people associate with the Brunels. Father, son and grandson all made their mark on London.
Marc Brunel
- The Thames Tunnel was the only project father and son worked on together
- Considered by many to be a better engineer than his son Isambard
Isambard Kingdom Brunel
- Worked on the Thames Tunnel with his father taking responsibility for the engineering when he was 21
- Launched the Great Eastern from Mill Wall on the Isle of Dogs, better known as Docklands
- Built the Great Western railway from Paddington station out to the West Country
- Built the water towers at Crystal Palace
- Built the original Hungerford pedestrian bridge where Charing Cross railway bridge now is. The suspension chains from this bridge are what now hold up the Clifton Suspension bridge.
Henry Brunel
- Isambard's son
- Was the first person, as a baby, to go through the Thames Tunnel when the first connection was made between the northern and southern bores
- Structural engineer on Tower Bridge
- Had a sister called Sophie who many considered to be the better engineer of the two but this was the Victorian age and girls did not become engineers
